How Much Does Custom Packaging Cost in Canada?

A straightforward breakdown of what drives packaging costs - and how to get the best value without overseas headaches.

Custom packaging pricing is one of the most common questions we get - and also one of the most misunderstood. The honest answer is: it depends. But that's not very helpful, so this guide breaks down exactly what drives the cost of custom packaging in Canada, what you can expect to pay at different quantities, and how to avoid common pitfalls that inflate your bill.

The 5 Factors That Drive Packaging Cost

1. Quantity

Quantity is the single biggest lever in packaging pricing. Custom packaging involves setup costs - dieline creation, plate fees, press setup - that are spread across your entire run. The more units you order, the lower your per-unit cost. This is why a run of 5,000 mailer boxes can cost $0.60 per unit while a run of 500 costs $1.80 per unit for the same box.

This doesn't mean you need to order 10,000 units right away. It just means you should understand that smaller runs cost more per unit - and that's okay. Many Canadian brands start with 500-1,000 units to test a design before scaling up. See our guide on minimum order quantities in Canada for a full breakdown of what to expect at each stage.

2. Size and Complexity

A small folding carton for a lip balm costs significantly less than a large shipper case for a hardware product. Larger boxes use more material, require larger print plates, and take longer to cut and assemble. Die-cut shapes, custom inserts, and unusual structures also add cost compared to standard box styles.

3. Printing

The number of colours, print method, and coverage area all affect price. A simple 1-2 colour print on kraft paper is the most economical option. Full CMYK (full colour) printing across the entire surface costs more, but is standard for most retail packaging today. Specialty finishes like soft-touch laminate, spot UV, or foil stamping add a premium but can significantly elevate perceived product value.

4. Material

Paperboard weight, corrugated flute grade, and finish type all affect cost. Standard corrugated mailer boxes use E-flute or B-flute board. Folding cartons typically use 18pt or 24pt SBS (solid bleached sulphate) board. FSC-certified or recycled-content materials may carry a small premium but are increasingly expected by retail buyers and environmentally conscious consumers.

5. Domestic vs. Overseas Production

Overseas packaging from China or other offshore suppliers often quotes a lower unit price - but that's before you factor in ocean freight, customs duties (often 6-18% on printed packaging), brokerage fees, and the cost of waiting 8-14 weeks for delivery. Canadian-produced packaging typically has a lower total landed cost - no customs exposure, and lead times measured in weeks rather than months.

Typical Price Ranges by Product Type

The following are approximate ranges for custom printed packaging produced domestically in Canada. Prices are per unit in CAD and vary based on quantity, complexity, and finish.

What's Not Included in Per-Unit Pricing

When comparing quotes, make sure you're comparing apples to apples. Some suppliers quote unit price only and add the following separately:

  • Dieline/setup fee - a one-time charge for creating the structural template. Typically $75-$250 depending on complexity. At Magenta Depot this is included in your quote.
  • Plate fees - charged per colour by some offset printers. Digital printing eliminates this cost.
  • Artwork prep - if your files need significant reformatting for print production.
  • Shipping - always confirm whether delivery to your address is included.

The Overseas vs. Domestic Cost Reality

Let's run a real example. Say you're ordering 2,000 custom mailer boxes.

An overseas supplier quotes you $0.85/unit - $1,700 total. Sounds great. But add $400 in ocean freight, $180 in customs duties (approximately 10% on printed packaging), $150 in brokerage fees, and you're at $2,430 - and you've waited 10 weeks for delivery. If anything is wrong with the order, you're looking at another 10-week cycle.

A Canadian supplier quotes you $1.40/unit - $2,800 total, including delivery, no customs, no brokerage. You receive them in 3-4 weeks. If there's an issue, it's resolved in days. The real price difference is much smaller than it first appears - and the risk profile is completely different.

How to Get the Best Price

  • Order more if you have the storage. The price break between 500 and 1,000 units is usually significant. If you know you'll use the inventory, ordering more upfront is almost always worth it.
  • Simplify your design for early runs. A 2-colour design on kraft is much cheaper than full-colour on white SBS. Test your product with a simpler pack, then invest in a premium finish once you're selling.
  • Standard sizes cost less. If your product fits in a standard box size, use it. Custom dimensions require custom dielines and often custom tooling.
  • Get your artwork print-ready. Packaging suppliers charge for artwork fixes. Having a clean, properly set up file (correct bleed, CMYK colour mode, outlined fonts) saves time and money.
  • Bundle multiple SKUs. If you have several products, quoting them together can sometimes reduce setup costs.
